Ladies Circle has a rich 85 year history and has certainly had to move with the times, but the core message that remains is women want to make new friends, try new things and be an active part of their community. This isn’t always easy in today’s world where working high power jobs, demands on our time and the expectations placed on the modern woman can hinder much needed “Me Time”
THE CONCEPTION OF TODDINGTON LADIES CIRCLE
1974
Eleven wives of Toddington Round Tablers met at Poplars in January 1974 to have a coffee and chat about forming a Ladies Circle.
The wives were :
Bridget Little - Pat Bass - Terry Hawkes - Ros Combe
Jill Boughey - Irene Chadwick - Sue Mence - Lorna Matthewman
Jenny Boon - Teresa Bryant - Marie Lyon
Some of these wives were complete strangers to the group, some were old school friends and some had been neighbours.
Our Extension Officer was Rosemary Scott who helped to advise us on how to proceed.
A committee was formed consisting of:
Chairman - Pat Bass
Secretary - Terry Hawkes
Vice Chairman - Jill Boughey
Ten months later we held our Charter Night on Saturday, 2nd November 1974 with a dinner dance with our husbands. at the Executive Hotel at Markyate.

The National Association of Tangent Clubs is proud to have been empowering women through friendship and fun for over 50 years since the inaugural Annual General Meeting in 1965.
Tangent was formed in 1945 to enable ex members of Ladies Circle to continue their friendships and maintain their association with Round Table and 41 Club. It is part of the Association of Ex-Round Tablers Clubs an international organisation with clubs in 28 countries. In the UK there are 725 41 clubs with 14,500 members.
TANGENT CLUB INTERNATIONAL
Tangent Club International (TCI) is an international umbrella association of Tangent Clubs worldwide. A Tangent is a geometric shape – a straight line tangent to the circle – the figure is the symbol for our purposes which are:
To promote and strengthen international friendships established through Ladies Circle International.
To promote, encourage and support new international friendships between Tangent Clubs worldwide.
To assist LCI wherever and whenever called upon.
To work side-by-side with the Round Table Family.
To be non-political and non-sectarian.
Our motto is: Let Friendship Continue.
In Tangent Club International, we wish to pursue the best we gained from Ladies’ Circle International – friendship, unity and the LC-spirit. Tangent Club is a natural extension to Ladies’ Circle, so the friendships and networks established at Ladies’ Circle can be maintained, when the upper age limit of Ladies’ Circle is reached.
