Horta

The historic arrival base in the Azores

Horta is the main town on the island of Faial and it is also the main stopping point for yachts that are transitting the Atlantic West to East. The whole island of Faial is very beautiful but very volcanic, picture 12 (right on the second row) shows how the volcano is structured.

This is also the place (now one of a few but I think Horta started the craze) where yachtsmen and women arriving by yacht, having crossed the Atlantic West to East, paint a picture on the harbour walls of Horta marina, as a record of their safe crossing.
